Austin Allegro
An astonishing ten years in production saw 642,350 built between 1973 and 1982, mainly at Longbridge in Birmingham in the UK, but also in Belgium.
A myth prevailed briefly post-launch that the car produced better wind tunnel results facing backwards than forwards. The claim was traced to mischievous journalists on the Top Gear car show who based it on the Allegro's bloated and non-aerodynamic appearance.
