7* “The Show Must Go On”

Updated: Feb 25

The title of Leo Sayer’s second single, and his first hit, back in 1973. It strikes an optimistic note, chiming I'd say with the of the mood of the organisers of this coming summer's Hampton Pool Open air concerts.

Hope springs eternal. But the way things look, lockdown seems likely to scupper plans to hold these concerts at Hampton Open Air Pool this year.

Returning to Leo Sayer for a moment, I was lucky to see him perform at North Staffs Polytechnic in ‘74, where the playlist included this great song of course, which he co-wrote with David Courtney; and the Pierrot clown persona was perfect for it. There’s a clue to how things turn out for the above planned concerts in the lyrical u-turn with which Sayer concludes each chorus of his song.

See May 19th Post 45 for how things actually turn out.

The larger of the two small blue rectangles nearest the red arrow, and beneath a green blob, is the main 36 metre long outdoor pool, the smaller being the outdoor pool for learners and youngsters. The concerts are held on lawns on the pool grounds, yards south of the pools themselves. This said, one or two members of bands have been witnessed diving mid-concert and fully clothed into the main pool before resuming their position, and performance, on stage.

There’s more on the pool in Post 91, “Splashing Out”, from July 4th.

March 2024 latest: Concerts are resuming this July. Hooray. Line-ups TBC.
