Brightening up a dull day in Teddington

I've no local history to offer regarding this lovely tree, though I would like to take a moment to share my surprise when I learned that magnolia ‘Elizabeth’, the first "precocious" yellow-flowering magnolia, was introduced to the world by the renowned Brooklyn Botanic Garden as recently as 1977. The "precocious" bit refers to the way the flowers have the cheek to precede the leaves, leaving bare branches to offer an uncluttered, structural backdrop. The hybrid’s name honours garden benefactor Elizabeth Van Brunt.
