Crop Rotation

Writer's picture: Dave GobleDave Goble

This magnificently upcycled gazebo, embellished with rope, adorns an allotment about fifty yards from our own. It is home to bean plants, and inspired the next bit.

This sad and rusting old rotary washing line was found on the pavement, leaning on the front garden wall of a house nearby. We thought we might be able to give it a new home, and a new lease of life.

Next, in search of a bit more height, we found an old broom handle, drilled four holes into one end of it, sanded it down, painted it black and put it in the hole at the top of the washing line. Vertical prong inserted, we ran a piece of string, (washing line, funnily enough), through each of the four holes, then down to the end and mid-point of each of the four arms, and finally down to the ground. And there she was: Bean Mother Ship II.

Come Spring 2021 we’ll plant eight bean plants, and hopefully they’ll do the rest.
