Tease and Cease

Writer's picture: Dave GobleDave Goble

If you ever watch or listen to independent T.V. or radio you must have noticed the increase in recent years in the number of adverts, (I could stop there), that "conclude" with a mind-numbingly tedious tsunami of legalese. Spoken at breathtaking speed by an especially selected motor-mouth with a monotonous voice, the barrage usually lasts as long, if not longer, than the "content" of the ad itself. I wouldn't be surprised if, on many independent channels, about 1/3 of any given hour is taken up by ads these days, and for perhaps half of that time "... terms and conditions apply." No one reads them. No one wants to hear them. (By design). It's almost a pity that from time to time there's a programme on one of these ad-riddled channels compelling enough to tempt viewing / listening (mute / channel selection / on-off buttons at the ready).
